SumDU has a powerful information arsenal that ensures the European standard of informational support for its scientific and educational activities.

A powerful collection of 2.5 million documents: books, scientific journals, GOSTs, patents, reports on scientific activities, abstracts, dissertations in economic, legal, natural, technical, humanitarian, and medical sciences. Over 60,000 copies are received annually, with 50% provided by the university’s publishing house. The collection includes works of university scientists with over 10,000 titles.

The library and information system of the university is organized in such a way that access to the necessary information is available from each workplace through the website of the Central Library (www.library.sumdu.edu.ua).

This access system became possible thanks to the implementation of modern information technologies in the library’s work.

Our readers are accustomed to having an electronic library card, an electronic form, and their electronic signature. Books are recorded using barcodes, and librarians use pen-scanners.

Traditional card catalogs are long gone in our library, replaced by the Electronic Catalog.

Electronic security systems are implemented in reading rooms, allowing readers to take books from shelves themselves. Journals operate on computers with internet access.

Readers have access to Electronic Catalog zones, Wi-Fi access zones, and the Virtual Reading Room where they work with electronic journals from Cambridge, Oxford, have access to Russian dissertations, scientific bases EBSCO, MEDLINE, resources of the URAN scientific and educational network.

The library is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment for working with information: viewing, reading, and recording information in any format (audio, video, text).

Technology implementation is not a fashion trend; it is a necessity dictated by the times, an instrument for navigating the modern information space.

The library has implemented and fine-tuned support and maintenance mechanisms, technologically coordinated in the following cycles:
– a system of computerized book issuance and service for all users, where recording books in an electronic form is done by scanning and controlled by the user with their electronic signature (PIN code). (The first in the region);
– a user registration and electronic plastic library card production system (Card Manager complex) that speeds up user authentication and their electronic form in all library system departments. (The first in the region);
– implemented Check Point software to protect library funds;
– open access reading rooms to all types of information resources (over 70 thousand documents) in traditional media, periodicals, CDs, 78 workplaces connected to the Internet. (The first in the region);
– traditional card catalogs replaced by the “Electronic Catalog” (EC), which fully reproduces all types of publications, contains over 200 thousand descriptions, and allows multi-aspect search by author, title, words from the title, UDC code, types of documents, language, publisher, year of publication, etc.; contains information on the distribution and location of publications. (The first in the region);
– implemented access through the EC to electronic copies of textbooks, teaching materials, guidelines, lecture notes, technical documents, etc. (The first in the region);
– organized an electronic catalogs room for working with the EC in the library;
– implemented online services for ordering literature through the electronic catalog and remote viewing of the personal reader’s form in real-time from anywhere;
– created a virtual reading room for access to subscribed resources: Liga-Zakon, Atlas-Analytica, EBSCO, Lonom-Standart, Russian dissertations. (The first in the region);
– connected to the Ukrainian scientific and educational telecommunication network “Uran,” which provides online access to databases of scientific periodicals of Springer, Cambridge University Press, Nature Publishing Group, Royal Society of Chemistry, AAAS (American Academy of Arts and Sciences), Oxford Journals Collection, APS (American Physical Society), etc. (The first in the region);
– the ability to convert information into a single format is implemented. The library is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment for viewing, reading, and recording information in any format (audio, video, text). Modern technologies and equipment are applied: scanners, printers, copiers, devices for recording information on memory cards;
– the professional photo scanner ATIZ Book Drive DIY is put into operation for digitizing the fund and further developing the “Electronic Copies” database. (The first in the region);
– hand-scanners are put into operation to prevent incorrect data entry and speed up the creation of the library’s information bases. (The first in the region);
– an updated informative website of the library (www.library.sumdu.edu.ua), which allows users to navigate its information space over the Internet. Features include using the “Electronic Catalog,” electronic library, getting acquainted with the bulletin of new arrivals, thematic library databases, news feed, structure, etc.;
– implemented access to scientific systems and repositories, limited resources, electronic version of “Visnyky Sumskoho derzhavnoho universytetu,” resources of the distance learning laboratory; contains links to the most famous Internet resources: websites of official institutions, libraries of Ukraine, portals of authoritative electronic libraries, websites of periodicals, etc.;
– the library is the only one in Ukraine that provides free access to all electronic copies of works by scientists (1.5 thousand, the database is constantly replenished);
– access to resources in the library is provided by 78 workplaces and a wireless (Wi-Fi) Internet access zone. Internet usage is free;
– real conditions for using library resources directly at the workplace – in the university network, 2010 computers, 89 computer classes.
